The State of Georgia was named after King George II in 1724, and was the last of the original 13 colonies formed. The "Peach State" is the largest state east of the Mississippi in land area and encompases a total land area of over 2,000 square miles with a population of almost 10 million people. The Northern half of Georgia is mainly mountainous, with the Southern half dominated by farmland and swampland near the border of Florida and along the coast. Georgia has one of the fastest growing U.S. populations with a growth rate of over 10.5%. The largest city and capital of Georgia is Atlanta. Other important cities include Athens, Augusta, the 2nd largest city in Georgia and home to the famous Augusta Golf Club, and Savannah, Georgia's port city. Tourism with an annual income of more than $34 billion, and agriculture comprise a large portion of Georgia's economy. Nearly a quarter of a million people are employed in Georgia.
