The Game Of Pickleball

Pickleball is a fun game that is played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

Wikipedia defines Pickleball as a racquet sport which combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. The sport is played by 2 or 4 players on a court with the same dimensions as a doubles badminton court.

The ball is served underhand. Points are scored by the serving side only. The first side scoring 11 points and leading by at least a 2-point margin wins. The standard pickle ball is made of a durable hard plastic material molded with a smooth surface and free of texturing, 2-3/4 inches to 3 inches in diameter - Think wiffle ball.

Some of pickleballs terminology include; Dink Shot, Drop Shot Volley and Groundstroke.

The history of Pickleball goes back to 1965. The sport was named after the founders dog, Pickles a cocker spaniel who used to chase stray balls. In 1967 the first permanent pickleball court was built. In 1972 a corporation was formed for the new sport. In 1975 the National Observer ran an article about pickleball followed by a 1976 article in Tennis magazine. In 1984 the first composite paddle was made by Arlen Paranto, a Boeing Industrial Engineer. He used the fiberglas/nomex honeycomb panels.

You can see Pickleball being played at the Anna Maria Island Community Center six times a week, Lakewood Ranch High School (No set schedule), the Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bradenton 2 times a week - Wednesday and Friday, and indoors at Colonial Oaks Park in Sarasota - Monday and Fridays - Cost: $3.00 per player. Pickleball is also played by the Kings Point Pickleball League in Sun City Center, Florida.

The Tampa Bay Senior Games includes Pickleball in their sports lineup.

Pickleball is said to be highly contagious.
