Domestic and international airlines serve several major airports in Florida: Jacksonville International (JAX), Miami International (MIA), Orlando International (MCO) and Tampa International (TPA).
Many smaller airports are located throughout the state. The Sarasota/Bradenton
Airport (SRQ) is located convieniently between two towns (Sarasota &
Bradenton) and very close to Siesta Key and may be reached by calling (941)
359-2770 (Automated message) or (941) 359-5200. Rental cars are readily available at the airport. Rental prices are among the lowest in the country. Ask about special fly-drive
package rates. For rental car companies located in the airport see the table below.
Amtrak stops in Lakeland, Jacksonville, Orlando, Sebring, Tampa, Miami, and Winterhaven as well as many other towns in the state. The trains that run between Los Angeles and Jacksonville
cross the northern part of Florida, stopping in Pensacola, Tallahassee
and other cities. Amtrak’s Autotrain service, which will transport
both you and your car by rail, runs from Lorton, Virginia (outside Washington,
D.C.), to Sanford, Florida (about 20 mi/30 km north of Orlando).
Reservations are a must on the autotrain. Another car/train service is
the Florida Fun Train that runs between Hollywood, Florida, and Kissimmee
(near Orlando). It includes special entertainment cars for
children and a wine bar and pub for the grownups. Telephone Number: 1-800-USA-RAIL
Greyhound provides bus service between Florida cities and to points outside the state. Their local address is 575 N. Washington Blvd. Telephone Numbers: Local: (941) 955-5735, Charter: (800) 454-2487
Three major interstate highways start (or end) in Florida: I-95 from the Maine-Canada border to Miami; I-10 from Los Angeles to Jacksonville; and I-75 from the Canada-Michigan border at Sault Ste. Marie
to just outside Miami. The Florida Turnpike (a toll road) splits off of I-75 northwest of Orlando and runs to Homestead, south of Miami. I-4 runs from near Daytona Beach to Tampa.
Once on I-75, Siesta Key is easy to find by taking either (Old exit 38 on maps which is now new exit 207) Bee
Ridge Road, or (Old exit 37 on maps which is now new exit 205) Clark Road, and heading west aprox 5.7 miles to
the beaches (follow the signs).
